If only I didn't feel guilty about spending money on myself!

Yes, I know I am a girl & should love shopping, but I have a very hard time spending my very hard-earned money when it's just on clothes! Unless of course it's something I NEED- like the new pairs of jeans I just got because mine were so old and faded I looked like I hadn't bought any new jeans since 1986! Or my new shoes because I was literally LOSING MY SOLE!!!! :) haha, that's funny both ways. Anyway, back to the subject. If I didn't feel guilty about spending money here's what I'd buy..... ok as for the clothes, I'd pretty much just buy out Tulle, Anthropologie, Ruche and Banana Republic. I'd also buy many leather-bound books and a ton of art supplies. Plus I'd need a couple of horses and someone to take care of them. Then if I had anything left, I'd figure out where I wanted to live for good & build a castle just like Hogwarts to live in, I'd buy just a small house by the beach, in the Swiss Alps, and one by my family---and if that's Utah I'd like to live in Draper, Alpine, or up by Tuscany (the restaurant). And of course I'd spend that money decorating my houses, and buying lots of cooking stuff from Sur La Table & Williams Sonoma.
What would you buy? Let's say you had 1o million dollars, you couldn't give any to charity or to other people-including the hubby, you HAD to spend it on YOURSELF, you also couldn't use it for trips. GO!

Art Room Under Construction
I like to read fantasy books but I came to a point in my life where I had ready everything "good" in the library on the subject. There are quite a few books that are too difficult to "fall" into and there are even more smutty fantasy books. I'm a kid at heart so I love JK Rowling's style, no smutty adult books for me! Anyway, I had a dream (just like Stephanie Meyer- she had a dream about a sparkly vampire and da da da da! TWILIGHT evolved!) that was SUPER cool! I was escaping from this wicked queen's castle on a horse while being chased by her black knight with a crossbow, and in order to escape, I stood on the back of my horse and jumped into the air- only to turn into a golden eagle. Ok yes, I read too many fantasy books---this is obvious---- anyway, the story evolved while I was teaching & couseling at Camp Vega. The other counselors would go out & drink. I- being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints- could not & did not want to do such things, so I stayed in the cabin & told my girls stories. Several of the girls and other Mormon counselors asked where I got the "main" story from. I told them I made the whole thing up & they said that I HAD to write it down. I put it on the back-burner for about two years not really thinking I could be a writer and people would just think it was stupid. Then I moved in with my Grandma Knutson for a summer. She came downstairs & saw me reading- like- ALL the time. (Yes I also hung out with my friends but to relax from school I read before going out) One day she asked why I don't just write my own book.... and that's when I sat down & started writing Ember. I don't want to say too much about it until I've got the copyrights & what not taken care of just in case I'm actually NOT fooling myself & something works out. Otherwise it'll just be a story I tell my kids-- and that's still great right?
What else have I been up to? OH! Evan's been helping me fix my website http://www.erinimaging.com and I started a blog http://erinimaging.blogspot.com and got a flickerpage http://www.flickr.com/photos/erinimaging/ AND I took photos of David Archuletta, David Osmund & Lavell Edwards at the Ascend Gala- very cool! AND AND I started teaching that photo class for UVU AND! Yes there's more! I've also started teaching private lessons on photoshop & photography at 50.00/hr. Very fun! But I really like TAKING pictures so if anyone needs anything you just let me know. Friends & Family always get a 20% discount. I also got my new business cards printed up which I LOVE- they look like my header on my erinimaging blog-so yay Lee! You're famous!
Ok I've also been getting ready for the Skills USA Conference in Park City, starting Thursday I get to go stay in a hotel & learn how to run this club- awesome! Although I think I like being at home the most. Part of me wishes I didn't have to go.
Lastly I've been trying to be more fashionable so I don't look like a molly mormon teacher lady who looks 40 at 24. So I've been following these two blogs, Dapper Demeanor & The Style Diet. Awesome!
And I think that's about it! What's new with you?!

AAALLLright
I've been SUPER busy setting up my classroom. After Evan and i got home from Puerto Rico (see my travel blog soon) it's been a whirlwind of meetings, curriculum & setting up posters. I don't there's a such a thing as DONE when you're teacher but I've finally reached a happy place where I can clam down. Especially since I found out I can procrastinate on taking the Praxis 2 for a few more months. Yes I already took the Praxis 1 but Alpine School District has special rules because they're fabulous & I now have to take the second Praxis to renew my license. Even though the state of Utah exempts me from this. How fun.
Evan an dI have also been putting in our own sprinklers. WHile most people got to BBQ and camp for Labor day I was out digging trenches in the hot sun & gluing pipe together. But what a sense of accomplishment! WE did that! (With a lot of help but still)
I also finally know where my book is going. I typed out the entire outline last night. Oh joy! Now I just need to write it-- I have about 20 pages Times New Roman, typed in word, font size 12,--- find a good editor who won't steal my stuff & find someone who'll publish it for me- um, for free & then will pay me royalties. I plan on being the next JK Rowling or Stephanie Meyer. I think it sounds like fun. Plus I think my story is good.
Anywho. that's what I've been up to. Now my next plan is to organize my art room --- but that costs money so I've got to wait a bit.
PS getting rid of prep period for an extra 1/8th of my salary... not sure if it's worth it. I'll let ya know at the end of the month when I finally see that large paycheck. :)
Au Revoir! (also I've been using Rosetta Stone to bruch up on my French. I'm hoping Evan does an internship there next SUMMER (not spring honey- SUMMER--- can't do that again!)

Books I love to read

On the eve of Anita's sixteenth birthday, her date with her new boyfriend, Evan, is interrupted by an accident that lands them both in the hospital. After a series of dreamlike visions, she awakens in Faerie as Tania, the seventh daughter of King Oberon and Queen Titania, who has been missing for 500 years. Anita doesn't know what to think, and while she is trying to figure things out, she uncovers a plot that could destroy both worlds. The writing is occasionally awkward, and the book's setting and characters are typical fantasy fare. Even so, there's enough mystery, suspense, and romance to carry readers to the inevitable happy ending, and girls fond of magical princess stories won't be disappointed. I enjoyed this book because it's a fun read. Not very difficult to fall into, and very difficult to put down if you allow yourself to care about the characters. I went right to the library for the second in the series.

Tania and Edric have entered the Mortal World (specifically London) in search of Tania's mother; Titania, Queen of the Faerie Realm. They are challenged with a series of obstacles to prevent them In their search. First off, news comes from the world of Faerie that the throne has been seized by the Sorcerer King, who has usurped the throne with the help of Gabriel Drake, Tania's erstwhile suitor, and her sister, Rathina, the woman who loves Drake. Secondly, the King has released the Gray Knights, a vicious and deadly band of assassins bent on killing Tania and anyone who could stand in the Sorcerer King's way. Third is almost more destructive and terrible, and that is Tania's mortal parents, who have forbade her from seeing Edric at all!
This book was a little more difficult for me to sit down and read cover to cover. At times the story is slow and predictable but I still enjoyed following characters I'd learned to care about from the first book.

Tania has brought the long-lost Queen Titania back to Faerie from the Mortal World of modern London. But when they cross between the worlds, they find only devastation.
The Sorcerer King of Lyonesse—ancient enemy of the Faerie Court—has been released from his amber prison. As the wicked sorcerer regains his power, King Oberon, Tania's father, is imprisoned and the Faerie Court is being destroyed.
Tania and her true love, Edric, must travel the Realm to try to find and rescue King Oberon, who is their only hope for defeating the evil Sorcerer King. And Tania must prepare for battle . . . and to fight a war that she may not survive.
I'm not really sure why Frewin Jones decided to change the name of the third book but it can be confusing as to which is the third- which is why I placed both titles in my title :)Either way- this book was much more interesting than the third but still not as intriguing as the first due to predictability. The author also leaves you wondering about some of the characters due to lack of development into the plot. I'd still recommend it as a read though just so you get the whole story. I haven't read the fourth book yet- it was supposed to be called Sorceress, now it is called The Immortal Realm. My local library doesn't have it so I've got to wait until I get home.
From Publishers Weekly
Twin 15-year-old siblings Sophie and Josh Newman take summer jobs in San Francisco across the street from one another: she at a coffee shop, he at a bookstore owned by Nick and Perry Fleming. In the vey first chapter, armed goons garbed in black with "dead-looking skin and... marble eyes" (actually Golems) storm the bookshop, take Perry hostage and swipe a rare Book (but not before Josh snatches its two most important pages). The stolen volume is the Codex, an ancient text of magical wisdom. Nick Fleming is really Nicholas Flamel, the 14th-century alchemist who could turn base metal into gold, and make a potion that ensures immortality. Sophie and Josh learn that they are mentioned in the Codex's prophecies: "The two that are one will come either to save or to destroy the world." Mayhem ensues, as Irish author Scott draws on a wide knowledge of world mythology to stage a battle between the Dark Elders and their hired gun—Dr. John Dee—against the forces of good, led by Flamel and the twins (Sophie's powers are "awakened" by the goddess Hekate, who'd been living in an elaborate treehouse north of San Francisco). Not only do they need the Codex back to stop Dee and company, but the immortality potion must be brewed afresh every month. Time is running out, literally, for the Flamels. Proceeding at a breakneck pace, and populated by the likes of werewolves and vampires, the novel ends on a precipice, presumably to be picked up in volume two. Ages 12-up. (May)

I absolutely LOVED this book. I learned something about the history of mythology while I read it. I think those are the most enjoyable books for me to read- ones that I do actually learn something but that it's through a story I can fall into and care about just like a movie. That's entertainment to me. I have a difficult time reading the more textbook novels that suck you dry on character development and plot merely to portray specific events through factual detail- painful factual detail. It was very interesting for me to see characters that I am familiar with from different cultures interacting with each other. I would highly recommend this whole series. Although SOME parts were predictable- most of the book was full of twists, turns and unexpected events. This is a series I would purchase and read again-hardcover naturally!
From School Library Journal
Grade 6–9—Flamel and company return in this fast-paced follow-up to The Alchemyst (Delacorte, 2007). The immortal human Nicholas Flamel; Scathach, the veggie vampire warrior; and the mortal twins of legend, Josh and Sophie, are still on the run from the malicious Dr. John Dee. Flamel retains two of the pages of the legendary Book of Abraham, and Dee will do anything to get them. After hopping a ley line to Paris, our heroes barely escape the machinations of Dee's partner in crime, Niccolò Machiavelli. While finding shelter with fellow immortals (Joan of Arc turns out to be a particularly helpful ally), Josh attempts to deal with the fact that his twin sister is now incredibly powerful. Having had her powers "awakened," Sophie's new abilities make him surprisingly jealous—a fact that Dee may find useful. Scott tapers down the sheer breadth of gods, goddesses, legends, and myths already introduced in his first novel, which is a bit of a relief. Even though the plot moves forward at breakneck speed, the author is careful not to lose sight of his characters' struggles or inner demons. Fans of the previous novel will certainly find much to love, root for, and fear in this successful second installment.—Elizabeth Bird, New York Public Library

This book was interesting and page turning fun. I had to wait to read the third as it didn't come out for a few months after reading this book- such is life- always waiting for the next good book!
Amazon.com Review
The third book in Michael Scott's "Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel" series, The Sorceress, kicks the action up to a whole new level. Adding to the series' menagerie of immortal humans ("humani") and mythological beasts, the book picks up where The Magician left off: the immortal Nicholas Flamel (of The Alchemyst) and the twins, Sophie and Josh, have just arrived at St. Pancras international train station in London. Almost immediately, they're confronted with a demonic bounty hunter that immortal magician John Dee has sent their way. At the same time, Dee's occasional cohort, Niccolo Machiavelli, decides to focus his energy on Perenelle Flamel, the Alchemyst's wife, who has been imprisoned at Alcatraz since the beginning of the series. In this book, Perenelle gets a chance to show off her sorcery and resourcefulness, fighting and forging alliances with ghosts, beasts, and the occasional Elder to try and find a way out of her predicament and back to Flamel. Scott is as playful as ever, introducing new immortals--famous figures from history who (surprise!) are still alive. He also adds to the roster of fantastical beasts, which already includes such intriguing foes as Bastet, the Egyptian cat goddess, and the Morrigan, or Crow Goddess. Raising the stakes with each installment, Scott deftly manages multiple story lines and keeps everything moving pretty quickly, making this third book a real page-turner. More than just another piece in the puzzle of the whole series, The Sorceress is an adventure in its own right, and will certainly leave series fans wanting more. --Heidi Broadhead

Leven Thumps and the Wrath of Ezra by Obert Skye and Ben Soward
Product Description
The dreams of mankind are in grave danger. The Dearth, the true evil beneath the soil, rises above ground and gains the strength he needs to defeat Leven Thumps. And speaking of Reality, Terry and Addy are about to join forces with a onetime janitor and the angriest, most confused toothpick alive: Ezra. What kind of power is raging inside that sliver of wood?
I still maintain that the first book was the best but it's great getting to see what happens to the characters throughout the series.
Pillage by Obert Skye
When fifteen-year-old Beck Phillips travels by train to the secluded village of Kingsplot to live with his wealthy but estranged uncle, Beck discovers some dark family secrets. A buried basement, a forbidden wall, an old book of family history with odd references to... dragons? Beck's life is about to be changed forever in this suspenseful tale about the destructive nature of greed and the courage to make things right. Pillage is filled wtih Mr. Skye's signature humor as well as some very intense moments. including a surprising ending, that will keep readers young and old engrossed and entertained.
This book was a little more difficult to fall into at first and remained difficult to continue reading. The story was a bit slow but I still enjoyed it. I'd still say a good read & I might even read it again in a few years.
The Hound of Rowan: Book One of The Tapestry by Henry H. Neff
In a hidden alcove within Chicago's Art Institute, Max McDaniels discovers a faded tapestry. As he watches, the tapestry begins to glow; soon after, he receives an invitation to attend a private boarding school in New England. When he arrives at Rowan Academy, where young people with Potential are trained to fight an unnamed enemy, he and the other apprentices are housed in magically morphing rooms and assigned animal charges. Max is paired with the last lymrill in the world, a nocturnal creature with metallic quills. They train on the Course, where they experience different scenarios as they try to achieve a goal and move up levels as they progress. Meanwhile, apprentices and even some full-fledged agents are disappearing all over the world. This novel's sprawling, quirky boarding school has obvious parallels to Hogwarts, but Neff's storytelling boasts charms of its own, and U.S. readers may appreciate that this magical adventure, the first installment in the planned Tapestry series, takes place here rather than abroad. Tixier Herald, Diana --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
This book was a little different from what I am used to reading but I enjoyed it enough to keep reading & seek out the following in the series. Delightful characters like Nick, Mum, Bob & Max keep you entertained while the story moves & twists in ways that are unexpected.
The Second Siege: Book Two of The Tapestry by Henry H. Neff
Fans of The Hound of Rowan (Random, 2007) will love this sequel. Those who haven't read the first book will simply be puzzled. In their second year at Rowan Academy, Max McDaniels and his roommate David Menlo, a mystic, discover that they must live with the Witches to fulfill a pact made years before they were born. To keep them and the Book of Thoth safe from the demon Astaroth and in the hands of Rowan agents, they are "kidnapped" by an ally. While on the run, the Red Branch offers to activate Max to be its newest agent. Initially, Max demurs but after dodging danger in Europe, finding his mother in the land of the Sidh, discovering his real father's identity, and having several harrowing encounters with Astaroth, he embraces his identity as the reincarnation of Cuchulain and joins as a full-fledged agent. The Second Siege is chock-full of magic, myth, and adventure, and has some fun and interesting characters and an intense, engaging plot. That said, without the background information from the first book, it will be hard for readers to follow.—Lisa Prolman, Greenfield Public Library, MA
UGH! The ending is SUPER frustrating & he needs to hurry it up and finish the next book so I can read it!!!!! Altogether an interesting book. This book goes along with Medieval beliefs about magic- which I found out from my trip to the Folger Library last week. You can tell the author has done some research.
Dark Whispers (Unicorn Chronicles) by Bruce Coville
Product Description
This is a tale of two quests: Cara Diana Hunter's search for an ancient story that may unravel the secret of the long enmity between the unicorns and the delvers, and her father's journey to free Cara's mother from the Rainbow Prison. Cara's journey leads her through the strange underground world of the delvers to the court of the centaur king, while her father must travel from mysterious India to the depths of the Rainbow Prison itself. This multi-stranded story will intrigue and delight the legion of fans who have been clamoring for the next tale in this beloved series.
I only have one thing to say to Bruce Coville and it's not very nice but I'm going to say it anyway... If he can't find time to write the third book to the Unicorn Chronicles then he shouldn't be dragging the story out. FREAKING A DUDE!!!! The first book in this series came out when I was in ELEMENTARY school & I have hoped & wished & waited as long as I could & I FINALLY found the second book in the series in Middle school- and then NOTHING NADA! I've graduated college you miserable little whelp now get back to work and finish the freaking series so I know what happens!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!$#^%$&&^*&^&#%$#&@#%!!!!!!
Enough said- the book was obviously great if I'm that pissed that the series is still going and didn't conclude with the third. Now all I ask is that one book is finished each week so that fast readers such as myself can finally find out what happens to Cara, Beloved, Ian, and all of the other characters I have grown interested in.
Anyway- the last book I have read is Midnight Sun- yes I know I'm evil but I wish Stephanie Meyer would get over herself and just finish the books she was planning on writing.
Actually the last book I have read has been my own- I'm writing a book but it's taking me ages because I have been without a computer pretty much all summer and you have to been in the mood. It's worse than painting when you're not in the mood. Nothing comes and you stare & stare at a blank screen. Anyway- I came down here to the computer lab to write but there's some kind of party going on in the next room & it's quite annoying and loud. So this is what I've got instead.

Back to School
Ok- back to back to school clothing...
Because I'm an art teacher & can get away with this...
ZELDA SKINNY LEG JEAN - RAW DISTRESS
and something for working out

SEXY YOGA SHORT from Express--- I think I haven't tried them on but they look SUPER comfy. & the Yoga pants look awesome too since I guess inevitably it WILL get cold again in Utah. Sigh...
And that's all that's really on my mind right now. I'm not sure what to put with the skinny jeans besides a white t-shirt & scarf because I HATE the vest/ HUGE shirt that makes you look fat look.
I sure wish Stacy & Clinton from "What Not to Wear" would magically show up at my doorstep but they're not doing a show in Utah anytime soon. Lame. And I've been looking at fashion blogs but some of the stuff just isn't practical & the rest is too immodest. The only one I really like is http://www.thestylediet.com/.
Anyway- I just want something different but not totally outrageous & of course, I still want to feel pretty & in style. Maybe I'll chill out once I get home. People in Utah care less. I remember my old photography teacher was always dressed so classy though & it made me respect her more because I knew she cared about stuff.

Randomness
Blogs! What an awesome resource! I have found so many photography & art blogs to teach me how to better form my craft- but I've also found some fashion blogs that I now frequent. Looking at these helps me with the newest fashions so I can still be hot for my husband! Especially because I HATE the newest fashions! These fashion blogs allow me to peruse fashions without spending hours wasting my time looking in stores for something that I would actually wear. I didn't like the 80s or the 90s for their AWFUL fashions so why would anyone bring them back? Although- I must admit, as mentioned in a previous blog, Evan made - yes MADE- me try on some skinny jeans. I thought I would hate them. My mom usd to wear these & Stacy & Clinton on "What Not to Wear" said they make you look like an icecream cone- although now I'm sure they're selling them by saying how fabulous they make you look. One down side to skinny jeans- you need to be skinny to wear them. I've seen to many girls out here that are 15+ lbs over weight & they should not be in skinnys. Not to offend anyone though because I think I can barely pass to wear them- it's time to go running & back on a diet- difficult to do when you're on a permanent vacation. Anyway- I digress- Blogs are awesome.
Something else I love- PLaylist.com. Here you can generate your own playlist with music from around the world! Freaking awesome! You don't have to buy music anymore because you're not stealing- you're streaming music off of the internet! It's like radio only no adds & you get to choose what you listen to and when. The only bad thing is that sometimes the songs are no longer posted on websites so you have to update it once in awhile. I think I've had to update mine like twice in the last year so it's no biggie.
Facebook is a love/hate relationship. Love it to keep up with your friends. Hate it because it's addicting. Enough said.
Travel deals! Evan and I are going to Puerto Rico thanks to the fabulous internet! We figured out it's only cost a couple of extra hundred (ok I know that sounds like a lot but for a week long beach vacation in the Carribbean it's not bad at all) bucks. I'm totally stoked! We leave Aug 8th & come home the 15th.
Anywho. There's my grateful list for the day as far as internet things go. I'm very excited to come home- see everyone - go camping/hiking & good old bbq's!

Boring
I'm pretty boring lately. I've been busy with curriculum
(ALMOST DONE WITH TERM 1 AND THAT"S ALL I"M DOING DANGIT! I"M FREAKING SICK OF THIS, I DON"T FEEL LIKE I"VE HAD A BREAK AT ALL AND I"M ALREADY STRESSING ABOUT SCHOOL STARTING!)
but today I made myself go outside for a bit. I jogged to the gym! Hurray! And I plan to do some grocery shopping later too- see I'm very exciting.
But- on the weekends we do fun things so check out my other blog http://simplifiedtravel.blogspot.com
last weekend we went to Gettysburg& Harper's Ferry & I plan to post on it soon. I'm also hoping that Evan will want to go walk the canals tonight so I can get some great shots there.

Blogs
Speaking of fashion blogs I was looking at a couple and since when is looking like a bag lady "cool" or "hhhhip" (in the words of Stewie and his Coolwhhip)
. I know an actual bag lady who dresses like this. She lives down the street. I will even try to take a photo of her. Don't get me wrong. I am all about (newly converted) the skinny jeans and th sexy scarf look, I'd even take a larger shirt with the skinny jeans (it jut looks better that way) but make it fit you. The shoes are also horrible. This looks more refined and MUCH more classy, minus the ginormous shopping bag of course :)
See? I'm not totally against the new 90's/80's look that's now in style. All I ask is that they do it with some class!
I'd love to copy this outfit on the left with Zelda Skinnys from Express and this Hollister shirt but the shirt is 50 bucks!!! Ridiculous! But ohhh so comfy and ADORABLE.
Unlike Kristin Stewart's outfit. I'm pretty sure we used to make fun of kids who dressed like this. As much as I love Kristin Stewart DON'T copy this please! It doesn't look good AT ALLLLL!
On another good note I get my running shoes today! Hurray! I can finally work on my goal of being super fit as soon as possible. My current runing shoes have served me well but I bought them my sophomore year of highschool so they are falling apart to the extreme- even to the point where I don't feel safe running in them anymore. The bad news is that running shoes are 100 bucks if you want the good kind (wrong kind of shoe = very bad injuries now and expensive surgeries later in life) so Evan wasn't too keen on the idea of buying me new ones. We were all ready to spend 65 bucks- which was a very good deal- and then we waited just ine more week and found something similar for 30!!!! yes that's 30 bucks for New Balance stability shoes in my exact size! Hurray Amazon & hurray for my elf sized feet! :) 6 2AA (narrow). Anyway- we're going for a run tonight & I CAN NOT WAIT! Of course Evan will have to because I"m probably so out of shape he'll have to stop alot & get really annoyed with me ;)--- hehe, just teasing honey! We all know you're very patient and nice :) that's why I married you! Ok enough blogging for the day- I've got to go to work on my curriculum now. Sigh.... Hey when I get my site up it's going to be awesome! www.simplifiedart.com and it'll be up by August 20th- right hon? ;)

What have I been doing?
So-
Since no one will hire someone for only two months and since I am a terrible liar and would feel too guilty telling someone that I wanted to work there for a really long time I have been keeping very busy with touring DC, taking care of Evan :), cooking pita bread weekly, reading good books, and working on my curriculum on the days that Evan doesn't need the computer. Today is such a day. I really SHOULDN'T work on it since I don't get paid for my many many many hours but I think by doing it NOW I will be much less stressed out during the school year... hopefully! Evan's also going to help me set up my website for my classes http://www.simplifiedart.com For all of my art ed friends you can see my calendars, demo videos, powerpoints, and any handout for my students. I actually have spent about half of my time researching curriculum of other teachers and "stealing" their best ideas for projects, etc. So, hopefully I've got a rocking year planned out for my students! Something else I'm really excited about is my classroom management plan. I don't really have problems with classroom management. Most students (I think) respect me, they're quiet when I need them to be and they have fun in my class. But last year I had a VERY difficult class that took longer to settle down. So I have a new plan. I'm going to divide my classes up into houses like on Harry Potter! I am even buying glass jars & different colored marbles. Each time the WHOLE CLASS is on time, they get points. If the WHOLE class is quiet while I'm lecturing and makes comments, they get points, if they keep the room spik and span they get more points.... etc. Disruptive behavior or irresponsibility loses points. The winning house gets a pizza party at the end of the semester... Or icecream depending on my classroom budget. Most students don't care about their grades- I know! SAD- but they DO care what other people think of them so I think this will put the right kind of pressure on them to do well in my classes. Anyway I'm excited about it. Well I had better get started oon my curriculum. It's not everyday I've got a computer! Don't forget to check out our trips on my travel blog. I'll be posting new trips soon :)

A test
How do I allow students access to documents? When I click on the "link" section in my "edit post" it wants me to connect to an url...not a document.
I was thinking a blog would be awesome because I can add quizzes for them to take as well as allow them to comment on each other's artwork and they could comment on the calendar so that if they were absent they can make up work very easily!
??? Suggestions? Input?

Fun Class
So this week I went to an open figure drawing session! It was three hours & only cost me ten bucks! It was a ton of fun. I got to meet new people (all artists) and I got to draw for ME. One of the artists there even wants to trade me for the piece I was working on. He's going to bring in some of his sketches and things for me to choose. I'm excited! I love doing art and it's just fun to have stuff from other people. I'm going to take a photo of the piece and post it later this evening. Anyway, I'm going back every week since Evan's gone. I'll get to add at least four more pieces to my portfolio which is always good. I really want to start thinking more seriously about going to grad school. I've just heard it's impossible to go to grad school AND keep a job since art classes are so time consuming. I'll have to ask around more. I eventually want to teach art at the college/university level and a Masters in art art is like a PHD in anything else, it's as high of a degree as you can get since they don't offer a PHD in studio art in America. Pretty cool! I'd also like to teach art classes during the summer for my job- kind of like what people do for private piano lessons but I'm not sure how to get it all started. Anyway- that's what I've been up to :)

Spring Break and after
Spring break is officially over, I've got to start work again in the morning and Evan will be gone in less than a week. Besides being very sad here's what I was up to:
I read four books- yes four! Artemis Fowl, Poison Study, hmph and two other books I cannot remember the names of. I wish the library kept a record of everything you've checked out.
Whoops- that was a draft I forgot to post. Well, it's April 28th & I am a free woman! Haha, jk honey.
What I've been up to besides sulking: Reading Magic Study: Sequel to Poison Study, I finally cleaned a bit yesterday, I'm working on grades and Purchase Orders at school, I hung out with my friends for an hour or so on Saturday, I found free rose bushes I've got to go dig up myself- oh joy- I bet I get at least ten scratches- who wants to bet for more? I also put together my rocking chair and now I get to paint it and a bookcase I got for Evan's office, I'm guessing someone dropped it off last night when I was asleep! THANKS! :) I get to go to court today to try and explain WHY I just didn't see the school zone sign, pick up the dry cleaning, take photos of my nephews, drop off my jeep keys to other :) mom & dad, and visit my mom. Whew! Despite keeping this busy the days are dragging on. At least I'm not the only teacher who feels this way- all of the other teachers look like zombies too so at least no one is bugging me about it.
Yesterday I got to go to James Christensen, Cassandra Barney, and um, ok I'll admit it, I can't remember the name of the other artist- but anyway they're all local famous artists & I LOVE James Christensen's stuff! Anyway- that was pretty cool. I'll have to post photos tonight.
Also- Check out my travel blog http://simplifiedtravel.blogspot.com
If you want to add anything just comment & I'll let you tell people about your fabulous trips too!

The Connecticut woman viciously attacked by a 200-pound chimp who inexplicably went bananas remains in critical condition this afternoon and faces "life-changing, if not life-threatening injuries" to her face and hands, officials said.
Hear the 911 Call (Warning: Graphic Content)
The chimpanzee, named Travis, was shot dead by police in Stamford after the violent rampage Monday left a friend of its owner badly mauled.
Sandra Herold, who owned the 15-year-old chimp, wrestled with the animal after it attacked her friend, Charla Nash, 55.
Nash had gone to Herold's home to help her coax the himp back into the house after he got out, authorities said.
After the animal - who had appeared in TV commercials for Old Navy and Coca-Cola when he was younger - lunged at Nash when she got out of her car, Herold ran inside to call 911 and returned armed with a knife and shovel.
Nash remains in critical condition after suffering what Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy called this morning "life-changing, if not life-threatening" injuries to her face and hands.
Her sister-in-law, Kate Nash, said that Nash underwent surgery Monday night and came out of it "OK."
"It was a very brutal attack," said Stamford police Cpt. Richard Conklin, adding that the woman's "hands were mangled."
Conklin said the chimp was in a frenzy earlier in the day and that Herold had given him the anti-anxiety drug Xanax in some tea.
He also said the animal may have attacked Nash because she was wearing her hair differently and had failed to recognize her.
"There was no provocation that we know of," said Conklin. "One thing that we're looking into is that we understand the chimpanzee has Lyme disease and has been ill from that, so maybe from the medications he was out of sorts. We really don't know."
After the 3:30 p.m. attack, Travis ran away and started roaming Herold's property until police arrived - setting up security so medics could reach the critically injured woman.
But the chimpanzee returned and went after several of the officers, who retreated into their cars.
Travis knocked the mirror off a cruiser before opening its door and starting to get in, trapping the cop.
That officer shot the chimpanzee several times.
"The animal had cornered him," Conklin said. "He had no other recourse."
The wounded chimpanzee fled the scene, but Conklin said police were able to follow the trail of his blood down a driveway, into the open door of the home, through the house and to his living quarters, where he died of his wounds.
Herold and two officers also suffered minor injuries.
Cops had dealt with the chimp in the past - including an incident in 2003 when he escaped from his owners' car in downtown Stamford for two hours.
At the time, officers used cookies, macadamia nuts and ice cream in an attempt to lure him, but subdued him only after he became too tired to resist.
At the time of the 2003 incident, police said the Herold assured them that the chimpanzee - who was toilet trained, dressed himself, took his own bath, ate at the table and drank wine from a glass - was not a threat to others.
Colleen McCann, a primatologist at the Bronx Zoo, said chimps are unpredictable and dangerous even after living among humans for years.
"They are unpredictable, and in instances like this you cannot control that behavior or prevent it from happening if it is in a private home," she said.

And then a relaxing ahhhh...
Ps- School is going great! We're doing to UBSCT's which are awful but it gives me time to catch up on some much needed reading! Not that I really needed that time, since Evan and I have been married I have read... are you ready?
Leven Thumps and the Wrath of Ezra
Pillage
The Fairy Path
The Lost Queen
and at least three other books I can't remember the titles of. I love books! I wish the library had a record of all the books you check out. Anywho- I'm alway on the lookout for more good reads. I love fantasy (not really sci fi, more just fantasy) and historical fiction. The next items on my book list are:
The Sorcerer King
The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel
The Fairy Rebel (loved this book as a kid and can't wait to read it again)
The Purple Emporer
etc... :)
I'm a nerd... oh well.

Fairytales and Art

So- inspired by one of my favorite artists James Christensen (whose daughter is a fellow teacher and I just idolize her because she's amazing), I've decided that I want to paint a "Fairytale Series"... we'll see how far this actually gets but I decided to keep you all updated on the process. The first step was to collect 'scraps'.
Scraps: a collection of images, fabrics, color schemes and composition examples that an artist will combine in order to create a work of art.
And on my search for images I found these:

I'm sorry but I almost laughed out loud (which would have been awkward as my students were all taking a test)... Now I'm sure we all had wigs for Halloween costumes but I'm also sure that none of us looked this silly. Lets dress kids as kids and adults as adults shall we?
Anyway.... artists are usually A.D.D. (I'm not, it's just my work for liking to do lots of things) and can't just do one part of a project at a time, so I took a break from scrap searching and I started to demolish one of my paintings by sanding it. I hated the painting, didn't feel inclined to EVER finish it and the supports are expensive.
Supports: what a painter or artist works on, the surface of a painting, drawing, etc. Canvas, Masonite Board, Paper, etc.
So- anyway. It was a reproduction of this painting.

I brought it out and started to sand and MY STUDENTS FLIPPED! It was so funny! They were saying things like "Oh my gosh! She's sanding over the face!" "What are you doing?!" "Why are you doing that Mrs. Johnson?"
I just laughed and said it was awful and I didn't like it and that I didn't want to have to buy another canvas because they're expensive... ok so it wasn't canvas- it was framed masonite board covered with linen, rabbitskin glue and homemade gesso- Leonardo Da Vinci style... all very expensive stuff.... but they wouldn't have know what the heck I was talking about so for all intensive purposes it was a canvas... I did explain it further to my students who really seemed interested bnut anyway.... They tried to argue with me saying that it was a good painting and that I shouldn't ruin it. FUNNY.
So, the process is going very slow. I started to sand it down because I wanted to try painting in Acrylics (polymer based paint)... geesh, I feel like Elle Woods "Isn't it the first cardinal rule of perm maintenance that you are forbidded to wet your hair for at least 24 hours after getting a perm at the risk of deactivating the ammonium thioglycolate?"... anywho, you can't paint acrylics on top of an oil painting because oil paintings never really dry, the paint is constantly moving on a molecular level....but then sanding was too much work, so instead of painting over the whole thing with acrylic gesso I decided to bag that idea and coat it with a Titanium White layer of oil paint... this layer provides an even base for painters. The problem with that idea is that in order to create an opaque, not transparent, layer you must do several layers of paint that has been thinnned with liquin... (liquin is what thins out oil paint and allows it to dry more quickly)
So that's where I'm at. I've collected most of my scraps and as I wait for my second layer of paint to dry I'm going to do several sketches of color experiments... trying different color combinations out to see what would look the best. I'm sure this is all very interesting to you :) thought it'd be fun for you to see the artist process :)
PS- no word on the house yet - In the words of my amazing husband...."FREAKIN A"

House, Marriage, and Life in general

Wow! What a wedding! The weather was just great, McDonald's after the wedding was delicious, I finished my cake
AND the reception was gorgeous with good food! I even got Evan to dance with me in front of lots of people!!!!!! BEST EVER! 'We danced to Grow Old Along with Me' by Peter Breinholt ( I chose that song because we went to an almost private concert and got to meet him). I will be posting a link to my wedding photos for all y'all to see as soon as I get them edited (I got an awesome deal on the photography because I wanted to edit my own photos). The honeymoon was so much fun too! We had THE BEST hotel ever, ate at chiquey miquey restaurants, had a full day at the spa and we went snowmobiling!
House- We are still getting it, it's just taking longer to get all of the paperwork done... HOPEFULLY within the next week we will be all moved in!!!!! :)

Job- I am looking for a really good ceramics teacher to come work with me at Westlake... or my job is open at Lehi I believe...but they might keep Doug (who is currently working as the third art teacher) on... but for sure, brand new school, a dream for facilities, and it's not that much further than Lehi! Come work with me :) Apply through Alpine School District and if you want interview or professional portfolio help I am more than willing to help out. I'm trying to get Evan to apply for the computer techie of the school- HOW COOL WOULD THAT BE?! See the photo of the school below? See the two antenna looking wings? The WHOLE wing on the left is MINE! Cool huh? That's the fine arts wing!
Anyway- There's a quickie of my life, right now I'm oober busy grading final portfolios and such so I gotta run! Ciao!
